About Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja

Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja occupies the southern half of La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, and represents one of the youngest and most active volcanic landscapes in the Atlantic. Stretching over approximately 50 km in length along the island’s spine, Cumbre Vieja is a volcanic ridge featuring numerous craters, lava flows, and striking geological formations formed through successive eruptions, the most recent occurring in 2021. The park’s striking topography includes steep ridges, volcanic cones such as the San Antonio and Teneguía peaks, and fertile basaltic soils supporting diverse ecosystems. Vegetation varies from pine forests dominated by Canary Island pine (Pinus canariensis) to endemic laurel forests and shrublands adapted to volcanic soils. Rich in endemic flora and fauna, the park hosts species unique to the Canary archipelago. Historically, volcanic eruptions have shaped much of the landscape, influencing human settlement and agricultural patterns, notably banana plantations on the lower slopes. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Cumbre Vieja’s extensive network of trails crisscrossing the ridge, offering panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding islands. Hiking is the primary recreational activity, with routes ranging from moderate day-hikes to multi-day treks, including the popular ascent to the Pico de la Nieve and the volcano viewpoint near Cabeza de Vaca. The geological dynamism, combined with lush natural habitats and cultural sites such as traditional Canarian villages, make Cumbre Vieja a must-visit for naturalists, hikers, photographers, and volcanic enthusiasts. Its relatively mild subtropical climate allows year-round visitation, although spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for extended outdoor activities.
